Август подходит к концу, так что если не успели уйти в отпуск – самое время. А что бы настроение было солнечным и ярким, предлагаем Вам вторую часть летних идиом. Учим английский весело и интересно.

  1. To beat the heat – to get yourself a little cool air or an ice cream or a cold drink – освежиться.
    Например: Do you know any good ice cream to beat the heat?
  2. Midsummer madness – a temporary lapse into foolishness, senseless behavior, folly, especially during the summer – чистое безумство.
    Например: His plan to become a beachcomber is midsummer madness.
  3. The summer and winter – to monitor one`s behavior or abilities long period of time – наблюдать за кем-то долгое время.
    Например: I will summer and winter him during this probationary period, to determine if we should hire him full-time.
  4. Indian summer– a period of unseasonably warm weather in early fall – бабье лето.
    Например: I hate the cold weather, so I’m hoping for an Indian summer.
  5. Social butterfly – someone who enjoys frequently mingling with other people at social events – светский лев/львица.
    Например: Tom’s always been something of a social butterfly, so we’ve never really worried about him making friends or findinghis way in the world.
  6. Push the boat out – spend a lot of money in order to celebrate something or have a very enjoyable time – развлекаться, тратить деньги на развлечения.
    Например: I earn enough to push the boat out and again.
  7. To take a shine to someone – to have or develop a fondness or preference for someone or something, to be attracted to or desire someone or something – понравиться, увлечься.
    Например: I think Jennifer has taken a shine to my friend Tommy, so I’m going to try to set them up on a date!
  8. Like watching grass grow – to be very dull or boring – очень нудный.
    Например: Rachel fell asleep during the big game because she thinks that watching sports is like watching   grass grows.
  9. To think the sun shines out of someone`s backside – have a very high opinion of somebody and think that everything they do is good – быть очень хорошего мнения о ком-то.
    Например: I think you should be the one to ask the boss – he thinks the sun shines out of your backside!
  10. Place in the sun – an advantageous or favorable position or situation – место, где вам комфортно и уютно.
    Например: I am so happy for my brother who works as a pilot now. He has finally found his place in the sun.

Совет: используйте идиомы, когда хотите подчеркнуть важность фразы или выражения. Нельзя использовать их в деловой переписке, иначе Вас поймут не так, как вы хотели бы. И помните, что идиомы – это как изюм в булочке, главное не переборщить.  Enjoy your summer)
